Zimmerman arrest is victory for the people

The question I would really like to ask him is, if he could look into Trayvon’s eyes and see how innocent he was, would he have then pulled the trigger? Or would he have just let him go on home?” said Tracy Martin, Trayvon Martin’s Father.

George Zimmerman arrested April 11, and charged with second-degree murder in the Trayvon Martin shooting.

Trayvon’s parents and the American public just may get the answer to this question.  George Zimmerman, self-appointed neighborhood watchman who shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder after protests made this issue a national priority.

“I can tell you we did not come to this decision lightly,” Special Prosecutor Angela Corey said in remarks broadcast live on TV and online. “We do not prosecute by public pressure or by petition. We prosecute based on the facts in any given case, as well as the laws of the state of Florida.”

Zimmerman will maintain his innocence and plead not guilty to the charges.  However, he may be in trouble since a police video release doesn’t back the leaked police report and the mortician reported he saw no signs of trouble on Trayvon’s body.

Second- degree charges do not involve premeditation but an unlawful killing of the victim “by an act imminently dangerous to another and demonstrating a depraved mind without regard for human life.”  It carries a mandated sentence of 25 years.  If convicted Zimmerman could receive up to life in prison.

This news is causing those who demanded justice, wore hoodies, and exclaimed “I am Trayvon Martin” to breathe a sigh of relief.  Victory is present!

However, although this news is call to celebrate, the war is not over.  This was just a small battle in the racial war, and the big battle is still brewing. Evidence comes with a change sign on a Michigan Freeway to read “Trayvon a N****R,” and the harsh criticism of Amandla Stenberg’s portrayal of Rue in The Hunger Games.

Americans can not put their signs away and fall back into their complacent lifestyle at this news.  Just as we came together to fight for this justice, we must continue to unite and fight until the end.

Together we can continue to prevail.
